Custom name keychains are one of the fastest-moving items in the 3D printing seller market. They're small, quick to print, and people will always pay a premium for something with their own name on it. Search "personalized keychain" on Etsy and you'll find thousands of listings — most of them 3D printed.

The problem is that fast prints often get underpriced. A 25-minute keychain isn't a $3 item. Here's what it actually costs to make one properly.

What a 10g name keychain actually costs you

The Custom Name Keychain model on Maker World is one of the most popular parametric keychain designs around — fully customizable, no supports needed, and AMS-compatible for a clean two-color base + name effect.

A typical print uses around 10g of PLA total (7g base + 3g for the name accent color) and takes about 25 minutes flat on the bed.

Cost itemAmount
Filament (10g × $0.02/g)$0.20
Electricity (100W × 0.42h × $0.15/kWh)$0.01
Machine wear$0.05
Failed-print buffer (10%)$0.03
Labor (customization + packaging)$2.00
Packaging (small bag)$0.50
True cost~$2.79

With a ×4 multiplier, your suggested selling price is around $11–12.

Why ×4 and not ×3?

Keychains feel like a simple print, but the hidden costs add up:

  • Customization time — every order needs a different name entered, the model regenerated, sliced, and checked before printing
  • AMS color setup — loading two colors and purging between batches takes real time
  • Keychain ring — you need to buy metal split rings to complete the product, which adds cost and packaging time
  • Failure rate — thin letter layers and small contact areas make keychains more prone to warping or delamination

At ×3 you're barely covering yourself. At ×4 you have a real margin. If you're selling on Etsy, add their fees (roughly 10–12%) on top.

What they sell for on Etsy

Personalized name keychains on Etsy go for $8–$18 depending on size, color options, and the seller's brand. Single-color simple prints sit at the lower end; AMS two-color with a nice presentation box push to $15–18. If you're at $5, you're leaving real money on the table.

Print settings for best results

Based on the Maker World profile for this model:

  • Layer height: 0.2mm (0.16mm for better quality)
  • Walls: 2–3
  • Infill: 10–15% Grid or Gyroid
  • Supports: None — print flat on the bed
  • Filament: PLA recommended (PETG for extra strength)
  • AMS: Print base color first, then accent color for the name letters

Pro tip from the designer: Enable ironing on top surfaces for a smoother, more premium-looking finish on the name face.

Batching saves your margin

Keychains are an ideal product to batch. Set up a full plate of 6–8 different names and run them overnight. Your per-unit electricity and machine wear costs drop significantly, and you only need to do the customization and slicing work once per batch session.

A note on the keychain ring

Don't forget to factor in the physical keychain ring. A bag of 100 split rings costs about $3–5, so roughly $0.03–0.05 per unit. Small, but it's a real cost — add it to your packaging line.
